How to change my IP address in Windows XP

|
One thing any Internet user should know is how to change IP Address. In this tutorial I will explain how this can be done in Windows XP/ Server 2003. I will not go to explain when you are going to need to change IP address or what value you should set the new IP to be. I only want to show the steps to do it. Please note that onlinehowto.net cannot be held responsible for any changes you have done in your network by following the instructions below.
Before proceeding I recommend that you check what your current IP address is and write it down. Here is how you can do that.
First step is to open up your control panel. Do that by clicking on Start-> Settings -> Control Panel. If you are in Category View go to Network and Internet Connections-> Network Connections . If you are in Classic view go straight to Network Connections .
The screen that you should see will look close to this.
For the purposes of this tutorial I will change the IP on my Local Area Connection . This is a wired connection. In case you need to change the IP of you wireless you need to click on Wireless Network Connection . Right click on the icon and select Properties
In the General tab of the window that will open, click once the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item, and click Properties .
This will open the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties window.
In the General tab, click Use the following IP address , and enter:
– IP address. The static IP address you want to assign to this computer.
– Subnet mask. Subnet mask used by your router.
– Default gateway. IP address of your router”s default gateway.
In Use the following DNS server addresses , enter all the IP addresses for the DNS servers your router uses.
Click OK. Click OK on the other windows also and you are done.

I prety like what you wrote, its kind of educating, its solved my problem.

Errdoo, did you manage to solve you problem? If not let me know on which step exactly you get lost and I might be able to help you. rgds, Stephen
i was wondering ,what is the main purpose of change ip address ,and can this one works with none wireless ? do i need to change only ip address ,how about subnet and gateway ,do i need to change all of it ?
hi joe, the purpose may vary and it generally is not subject to the tutorial. yes, it works on any network interface – wireless or not. the third question is really a matter of what IP you are changing. for example you want to change the ip in your local home network from 192.168.0.5 to 192.168.0.10 – you do not need to change the gateway. But if you have reconfigured your router to move from 192.168.0.1 to 192.168.1.1 and you want to change to change your IP from 192.168.0.10 to 192.168.1.10 then you will need to change the gateway to the new IP of the router. I hope I made it clear for you
sir… im lost in changing my ip address its says.. (this IP address is not valid). pls help.. thanx
you have got a wonderful site .please help me for my further queries.
Hey, can servers and what not reckonise your old IP address if you change it following these steps?
well, if you use to have IP address provided by DCHP server this may interrupt the connectivity, as well as that if you are on wireless network, the wireless itself could be a router and then you may loose the ability to use it.
hi……….
how can i change my ip in my pc ………
windows 7.

Just change the numbers in the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties window.
If you are talking about external IP address, you should speak with your internet service provider

How To My Ip Adress when It bann
i dont get it do you make up all the new information in the internet protocol properties
guest, well I made up the IP according to the network segment that the computer was. Generally if you are directly connected to the internet you cannot change the IP with numbers that you made up on your own but you have to ask your ISP.
Excuse me, but i got a Problem by the time that I will now put it into a Proxy mode. How can I obtain a Proxy of Static IP Add. Subnet, and Default? and where can i also get the Pref. DNS server? Shall I need to made one or I’ll find some by search in google/yahoo? kindly answer.thank you

i want change Ip address
good one … thank u
it really helps me
find free proxy
i get bannnd for 3days
@bsbs_mew – I’m sorry to hear that. Some ISPs will ban you if you change your IP with one that is used by someone else in the network. Note that if the IP you want to change is a real Internet IP you have to check with the provider if you can change it.
Very good and easily understandable post.

Nice ONe
can figure out how to change IP address help
What is your issue Lisa?
nice tips, but this only work on lan network and its not going to change your ip when surfing the net.
Not so true. If you have few IPs provided from your ISP you can switch between them. Certainly this is very rare, mostly met if you have dedicated server and few IPs provided by the hosting company.
Worked great. Thank You!
thanks for the instruction. I hope it will work…
