In this tutorial i will explain how you can change the IP address of your wired connection using Network Manager GUI interface. For the purposes of the article i have used Arch Linux 2009.02 with Gnome 2.24 and Network Manager 0.7. The GUI is gnome-network-manager (the binary is actually called nm-applet).

If you do not use Network Manager to administrate your network connections that this tutorial is not for you. Many distributions however have Network Manager pre-installed in with Gnome so if you are one of this users you can proceed. I assume that nm-applet is working normally so start by right clicking on the icon and select Edit Connections. A new window will open and by default should look like this.
