IMAP
Internet Message Access Protocol is a standard protocol for accessing e-mail boxes. It is replacing POP3 as main protocol used by email clients to communicate with email servers, because it retrieve and manipulate message stored on the server, without actually to retrieve the messages as POP3 does. With IMAP you can review headers, create or delete folders and messages, and search them remotely without having the mails in a local folder.
