Heading line position
So far you have dealt with lines and shapes in the last tutorial Lines combined with common shapes. As discussed, the lines represent words in your layouts. You should now start working with letter forms on a line that represents words. This presents a major hurdle to overcome, simply because so far you have been looking at shapes and space in order to make aesthetic judgments. Now, however, the introduction of familiar forms presents another problem â€" namely that the letter forms themselves will also pose a challenge to your visual judgment.
So that you recognize the problem for yourself, I want you to take a random selection of capital letter forms and use the visual examples on this page as guides. Draw two parallel lines and render your letter forms between the two lines, staying within the confines of the lines and making sure that the letter forms within your examples are drawn to the same size. These can be produced on the transparent paper to be offered later to the design area for assessment.
Some consideration should certainly be given to the spaces between the individual letter forms, since these also become an essential element of the overall visual balance.
By using various thicknesses and density in your drawing media you will be able to make different impressions and marks, producing different effects for your letter forms. To get a feel for the heading within the design area, move around the various options you have created until the satisfactory positions become obvious to your creative eye. Heading size and spacing will be expand in the next tutorial
