Let's start on your design. What are the first decisions to be made? These must be the shape, size, and proportions of your design area. How do you arrive at these decisions? Initially, you must consider the nature of the project in hand and what would be the most creative, but relevant shape, size and proportions for that job, but I would suggest that at this stage you put to one side and foreseeable restrictions, since these will only hinder your creativity.
The only practical way you can discover the variety of possibilities is by roughly drawing a number of variations on your pad. You may later find that you need to revise your original design, but do not worry because this development will place naturally.

Many graphic designers would experiment with these shapes by cutting them out of various materials like colored paper, textured papers, newspapers or just playing in Corel Draw, Adobe Illustrator.

Here you can see just a few of the various possible shapes that can be represented in the design area.

Most designs will involve words, which will be presented as headings or body text. The first example will be the placing of single line to represent a heading. The purpose of this is to move the line around inside your shape to establish where the line presents the most visually dynamic position in the space. As you do this you will find that you are more naturally attracted to some positions than to others. This discovery is the first in the natural creative process.

From this point you will be able to use your judgment, guided by your creativity. Experiment extensively with the line, trying every considerable position in order to gain an understanding of the control between space and marks you are making. You will begin to recognize how the positions will affect the feeling of tension within the space according to the weight, position and length of your line.
You can make them on scaled-down versions of the actual design size in a small area and compare them with each other. This process is known as making thumbnails sketches.

Now let's continue with: Choosing design line proportions
