This article is intended to familiarize you with the basics of smoothing groups in 3DS Max. This is just a brief explanation for first time users in the program. You have already know the basics of user interface in 3DS Max. If you do not, will be nice to spend some time to examine basics of 3D Studio MAX

Primitives and smoothing groups

Whenever you create primitives in 3DS Max, they appear smoother, the areas where corners are sharp have defined hard edges, curves and areas have seen smooth and soft. If you change the view in Facets shading, you can see each individual person and the edges separating each polygon.

(Customize -> Viewport Configuration -> Rendering Method -> Facets)

Smoothing groups for these primitives are preset to show a round sphere, cube with a hard raised edges. 3DS Max uses these groups to make the kinds of objects as we are accustomed to seeing them.

First, create a sphere. Then change the shading of the "Smooth Highlights" of "Facets Highlights". You'll see in between Smooth and Facets. Facets in each polygon is shown with solid edges. Field no longer appear round, but has become of squares, which are linked by their edges. So far we found that polygons can be adjusted or distinct edges. Return to "Smooth Highlights" and let's move on.

Select field, press the right mouse button and select "Convert To - Convert to Editable Poly" from the menu that appears. Now you can look at smoothing groups. Select a sub-object level of Polygon section "Selection". Select the number of polygon area and scroll down to the section "Polygon: Smoothing Groups". Everything we are interested in this section, although there are other useful things related to polygons by selecting a specific material, changing colors on top and others.

If you look at the section you will see that the polygons are selected button (group) (1). This button is yellow, to show that all polygons share the same group. If you select the polygon by two different groups, the numbers of groups will disappear and remain only gray buttons (2). But let us return to examples. Click on the button 1 to become inactive.
