How Much does a Website Cost?

by Ivory Morhuld

Ivory Morhuld
Many times I have received e-mails from friends of my friends, for asking me about a web site. The e-mails are something like this:

Hello,
I am interested in developing new website for my cosmetic company. Several pages, illustrations, photos - nothing special. I have a domain name. Current status - http://www.my-current-website.com. What price you can offer me?

Best regards,
John Smith

The question is absolutely identical to:

Hello,
I am interested in the purchase price of a new car for my cosmetic company. Several doors, windows, spare wheel - the standard things. I have a driving license. My current car is Chrysler Sebring.

Best regards,
John Smith

How Much does a Website Cost? WTF? Every time when someone ask me something like this, I am getting mad.

Now lets make it more serious. The price for developing a new website depends on many parameters. This parameters are the features which you want to offer in your website. These parameters have to be sett by you. I can list some sample parameters, but I am afraid that you will focus only for these. And later, when you ask me for some other and important things, I can not include this features in your website. These parameters are not technical, they are functional. You just have to describe it. With no need to ask you for each, one by one. Just because there are no universal list with parameters for all websites.

You are wondering - What are these parameters?

- The first thing is your Logo. The logo is very important to be presented on your web site, and by this way your visitors will associate and recognize like your trademark.
- The next thing is to describe how many language versions have to be supported by your website.
- If you offer products and/or services to your visitors, it is good to make some categorization of this items (by type, size, purpose, material, price, etc). This categorizations is important for developing a database for your website.
- How will be organized the support of the website content? By building special CMS (Content Management System) for this website or you (or someone employed by you) will edit database data and website files.
- Does the website will offer sending messages from some web form to e-mail, mobile phone, instant messenger?
- Does the web site will offer to download files from users?
- Does your website need password protected zone for distributors, dealers where they can get confidential documents, pricelists, etc.
- When you need this website to be ready to go online?
- And more, more, more...

For now, I just guess only for these. And don't think that this is all. There are many other features which is good for you to think over them. Also, entire content like text, photos, logos, drawings, etc, have to be prepared by you in absolute completed status. Actually you have to prepare everything for which you will ask me later - where is the.....?

Very helpful for you (and me) will be, if you draw tree-like structure of your website as you want to be. With all levels, sub-levels, category, sub-category, etc. Just for an example:

Home
- About Us
- Contacts
- Feedback form
- Map

- Products
- Products category 1
- Products category 2
- Products category N

- Services
- Services 1
- Services 2
- Services N

- Success stories
- Partners

Of course, there is one more option for you. You can install some free CMS like OSCommerce, to buy one OSCommerce template for $49.95 from some webshop, fill the contents and you are ready to go! This option is not so bad for some unassuming clients, not searching for unique face for their website. But how many other websites were purchased with this design template, and use this CMS?
